Newcastle 1-0 Manchester United: SEVEN things you missed

Matt Ritchie’s late strike for Newcastle on Sunday condemned Manchester United to a damning defeat.

Jose Mourinho praised Newcastle for their animalistic approach to the Premier League clash, but will now turn to the sluggish performances of his players, with specific attention likely to be paid to Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba.

In case you were too preoccupied in the drama that unfolded at St James’ Park, Sportsmail brings you SEVEN things you missed from Jose Mourinho’s heartbreak in Newcastle.

Black Armbands

Manchester United wore black armbands during Sunday’s Premier League clash with Newcastle in memory of Liam Miller.

The former Red Devils midfielder died on Friday at the age of 36 after suffering from cancer.

Having made 22 appearances for United’s first team, Sir Alex Ferguson paid tribute to Miller himself.

He said: ‘I am very sad to hear that Liam has died. He was a good professional, who served our club in an excellent manner. He was a quiet, unassuming young man and was popular with everyone at Carrington.

‘On behalf of all my staff who worked with Liam at the time, we send our deepest sympathy to his family.’

Where in the world is Marcus Rashford?

This is the first time this season that Marcus Rashford has not been included in Manchester United’s match day squad. Jose Mourinho confirmed that the youngster and Ander Herrera had small muscular injuries and would not be available for their trip to St James’ Park.

While the damage was well and truly done, the energetic duo should return to action next week for Manchester United’s trip to Huddersfield in the 5th round of the FA Cup.

Got your nose

Martial came close to death in the opening minutes at St James’ Park as a game of ‘got your nose’ went oh so wrong for the Frenchman.

The forward spent some quality time with the pitch after Mohamed Diame appeared to make contact with his face. While it looked touch and go for a while, Martial was somehow able to soldier on.

Arguably it was his highlight of the afternoon after being shunted out to the right wing. Unsurprisingly he missed more clear-cut chances than anyone else.

Young’s magic nutmeg embarrasses MOTM Shelvey

Between picking up just about every loose ball in midfield and fighting off Harry Potter, Jonjo Shelvey has had an impressive afternoon. He was deservedly handed man of the match.

As good as Shelvey was, it didn’t stop Ashley Young from briefly ending the midfielder’s career with a nutmeg that was pure filth.

Jose Mourinho DEFINITELY wasn’t a goalkeeper

It’s always good when a manager has a moment that he can get involved in the match beyond shouting in the fourth official’s ear. Not known for his prowess on the pitch, Jose Mourinho still likes to have a go.

The Portuguese manager had a go trying to catch a clearance – but it didn’t go to plan. Not only did the ball sail over his head but he nearly fell back over the water bottles that ‘came out of nowhere’ to trip him up. It was the second thing that Manchester United gave to Newcastle fans to cheer about.

Not all English players are diving experts

Chris Smalling was lucky not to have conceded a penalty in the opening 45 minutes after fouling Dwight Gayle in the box. But his mastery of the dark arts ended then and there. The defender thought he’d dip his toe into the diving pool. Safe to try it in your own half, right?

There have been some fine efforts this season, but it might have been the worst dive you’ll see all season, although Smalling does deserve some credit for his commitment to the belly flop.

With the shocking state of it, Craig Pawson was left with little choice but to book him for simulation and award a free-kick – which only saw them score the winner. Maybe diving isn’t such a good idea.

It all ends in tears for Pogba

It really wasn’t Paul Pogba’s day. Before even leaving his hotel this afternoon, Graeme Souness threw all kinds of shade his way saying that the Frenchman is ‘a country mile away from being a great player’ and compared his performance as a central midfielder to that of a little boy. The midfielder then appeared to struggle with an injury in the warm-up.

Pogba left the warm-up early. While concerns lingered over his fitness he managed to play 66 minutes. Albeit most of those spent squarely in Jonjo Shelvey’s pocket. He was subbed off for retiring Michael Carrick and was left looking dejected on the bench.
