Newcastle are set to miss out on Atalanta full-back Robin Gosens this January as he is set to favour a move to Inter Milan, according to reports.

The German full-back, who has been out injured with a hamstring problem since September, impressed at Euro 2020 and has been a target for some of Europe’s top teams for some time.

Reports in Italy claimed this month that mega-rich Newcastle are ready to triple the 27-year-old’s wages as they look to bolster their squad ahead of the relegation battle run-in.

But according to Goal, Gosens prefers a move to Inter – who have offered Atalanta the possibility of a loan until the end of the season with an option to by the German for £21million in the summer.

The report adds that Newcastle are prepared to offer Gosens a £57,000-a-week contract – nearly three times as much he is reportedly on at the Bergamo club – but Gosens is more open to joining Inter on a £42,000-a-week contract.

The German international is set to be out until the middle of February and a move to Inter could see him play a part in the Nerazzurri’s Serie A title challenge.

Simone Inzaghi’s side moved into the winter break four points clear of rivals AC Milan and Napoli having played a game more.

Gosens’ Atalanta, meanwhile, are 10 points behind Inter in fourth place, having played the same amount of games.

Newcastle have wasted little time in showing their ambition in the transfer market after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) completed their controversial takeover of the club in October.

They bought Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid for £12m, before exercising Chris Wood’s £25m buy-out clause to sign the English striker from Burnley.

Eddie Howe’s Magpies went into the international break in relatively good form, picking up five points from a possible nine in their last three Premier League games to move one point from safety.
