Harvey Barnes is considering switching his international allegiance from England to Scotland, according to reports.

Steve Clarke’s side are on the verge of qualifying for Euro 2024 following a 3-0 win against Cyprus on Friday, and could now be set for a further boost.

Newcastle United winger Barnes has made just one appearance for the England senior team and that came as a substitute in an Ocotber 2020 friendly against Wales.

Barnes has regularly represented England at youth level but his Scottish grandparents allow him to qualify for Scotland.

He is now seriously considering making the switch, as reported by The Times.

The 25-year-old is yet to start for Newcastle since making a £38million switch from Leicester City following their relegation from the Premier League.

He has made an impact off the bench, though, scoring and picking up an assist in the 5-1 win against Aston Villa on the opening weekend of the season.

Eddie Howe’s side have since lost three consecutive matches, meaning it may not be long before Barnes earns a place in the starting XI with the Magpies looking to get back to winning ways.

Scotland boss Clarke was hoping to call upon Barnes’ Newcastle team-mate Elliot Anderson in the current round of international matches but has been forced to wait.

However, the creative midfielder was forced to return to Tyneside without making his debut after picking up a knock.

Barnes will no doubt be keeping a close eye on how Scotland fare in their upcoming friendly against England on Tuesday.

Gareth Southgate’s side will make the trip to Hampden Park following a 1-1 draw with Ukraine in Wroclaw that has delayed confirmation of their Euro 2024 qualification.

Kyle Walker’s first-ever goal for the Three Lions cancelled out Oleksandr Zinchenko’s opener, but England dropped points for the first time in their Group C qualifying group.
