A man who spent a million dollars renovating his home has been left heartbroken after it burnt to the ground just days before it was due to be placed on the market.

His timber home didn’t stand a chance from the early-morning blaze that started from his neighbour’s house in New Farm, Brisbane.

‘Brand new, every single bit brand new, every single thing,’ he told Seven News, adding that he was luckily fully insured.

The blaze was described as a ‘giant bonfire’ by emergency workers who were called to the house fire on Monday morning.

It’s believed the fire started from a single candle in a home belonging to a woman who was fortunately out walking her dog at the time.

It took 35 firefighters to contain the blaze that lit up the entire street.

The woman’s neighbour said, ‘her heart’s broken, but she’s alive, her dog’s alive.’

Witnesses Olivia and Claudia said: ‘we woke up to screaming…there were people everywhere running around.’

The neighbours said they feared someone was inside, but luckily both homes were empty.

However, from the neighbouring units six people had to be evacuated.
