Neymar may miss Madrid clash after breaking metatarsal

  • Neymar sprained his right ankle and broke his fifth metatarsal against Marseille
  • During Le Classique the Brazilian was taken off on a stretcher and in tears
  • The forward could now miss Paris Saint-Germain’s second leg with Real Madrid
  • It was also confirmed that Marquinhos has torn a muscle in his left quadricep

Neymar is a doubt for Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid after the Brazilian broke a bone in his foot and sprained his ankle.

During PSG’s victory over rivals Marseille on Sunday, the world’s most expensive player left the field in tears and on a stretcher following an aerial challenge with Bouna Sarr.

He underwent medical tests in the wake of their 3-0 victory in Le Classique and the Ligue 1 giants have now confirmed that the Brazilian striker has damaged his right ankle and broken the fifth metatarsal in his foot.

The nasty injury means Neymar could now miss the second leg of PSG’s Champions League blockbuster against Madrid next week.

Unai Emery’s side trail 3-1 from the last-16 first leg in Spain and may have to try and overturn the deficit without their most expensive asset.

Neymar’s stay in the French capital has been marred by a number of controversies and public spats.

But since his £198million move from Barcelona last summer, the 26-year-old has scored 29 goals in all competitions to help Emery’s side build a 14-point lead at the top of Ligue 1 and reach the last-16 in Europe.

The French giants are also sweating on the fitness of Brazilian defender Marquinhos after it was revealed he has suffered a grade one tear in his left quadricep.

Fortunately for PSG, the 23-year-old requires only a few days rest and is expected to be fit for the second leg against Madrid.

Despite their double injury blow, PSG proved too strong for their fierce rivals Marseille at the Parc des Princes on Sunday.

Kylian Mbappe, Rolando and Edinson Cavani all netted for Emery’s side as they moved 16 points ahead of third-placed Marseille.
