NFL Draft 2024: Washington State’s Jaden Hicks tells his family he’s joining the Kansas City Chiefs in emotional moment while watching event together

This is the moment Washington State’s Jaden Hicks discovered he had been selected by the Kansas City Chiefs while watching the 2024 NFL Draft.

In the fourth round of this year’s draft, reigning Super Bowl champions Kansas City announced they had opted for Hicks as the 133rd overall pick.

The 6ft 2in safety, who tallied 79 tackles, 2.5 sacks, two interceptions and a forced fumble in 12 starts for the Cougars last season, was surrounded by his family when he received the all-important phone call from the Chiefs.

A heartwarming video shared by the team first shows Hicks taking the call while watching the draft, with his family seating nearby in anticipation.

He then puts down the phone and simply says: ‘The Chiefs.’

His family were ecstatic after hearing of his move to Kansas City, leaping out of their seats and embracing him to celebrate his draft selection from the back-to-back Super Bowl winners.

Hicks was ranked by some pundits as the No. 1 safety in the class prior to this week’s NFL Draft.

He was a durable player for Washington State, appearing in each of their 26 games over the last two seasons. That stretch included 23 consecutive starts to end his career in Pullman.

The former Cougars safety was a three-star recruit out of Las Vegas before heading to Washington and eventually being named to the All-Pac-12 honorable mention team.

At 211lbs, Hicks is expected to bring plenty of aggression and intensity to Kansas City’s secondary. 

The Chiefs are looking to become the first team in history to pull off an unprecedented ‘three-peat’ by winning a third straight Super Bowl next season.
