Nick Kyrgios claims fan is smoking MARIJUANA as he spits and slams his support team at US Open

Drama at the US Open as Nick Kyrgios tells umpire a fan is smoking MARIJUANA, gets warned for spitting and tells his support team to ‘go home’ in furious F-bomb outburst during win

  •  Nick Kyrgios has beaten Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi in the US Open
  •  The Aussie won the first two sets before losing the third after an implosion
  • He then won despite appearing to lose it at his supporters on several occasions
  • Kyrgios will now advance to the third round, where he will take on JJ Wolf

Nick Kyrgios has advanced to the third round of the US Open in trademark style – complaining to the chair umpire of marijuana smoke, being warned for spitting on the court and letting fly with a continual series of expletives at his own coaches.

Kyrgios won the first two sets against Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi before another of his infamous tantrums as he lost the third set.

However he steadied to wrap it up 7-6 (3), 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, despite continuing to hurl barbs at his own support box.

Kyrgios somehow found new grounds for complaint as he told the chair umpire during the third set that he was being affected by marijuana smoke in the air; which commentators said ‘they’d never heard of before’.

‘It was f***ing marajiuana. It was smoke. Obviously I’m not going to complain about food,’ Kyrgios could be heard saying in the on-court microphone.

‘When athletes are running side to side and they have asthma, it’s probably not ideal.’

He was then issued with a code violation for abusing his own team, and could be seen releasing a huge spray of spit; earning a conduct warning and disgusting fans in the stadium and those watching from home.

The wheels were well and truly starting to come off and despite being able to close out the second-round match, Channel 9 commentator Todd Woodbridge said it was high time a coach ended his self-destructive tendency to lash out at others whenever he was not playing well.

‘At some point the people who are sitting in his players box need to take some action,’ Woodbridge said on the broadcast.

‘That action should probably be standing up and walking out. They’ve got nothing to do with what goes on on the court. That is up to Nick.’

This isn’t the first time Kyrgios’ has caused a stir at the US Open with remarks about marijuana.

Six years ago, he responded to a Twitter follower confirming that players on tour were allowed to smoke it.

The comment earned the ire of sports doping organisation WADA, with a  spokesperson later confirming marijuana use is in fact banned during competition, though it is not prohibited when used outside of competition.

After the match, Kyrgios then took a huge swipe at New York – despite the ‘Big Apple’ being regarded as one of the great cities of the world.

‘It’s very different to the way we live Down Under (in Australia). It’s a crazy place, I don’t know how anyone can live here,’ he said in an interview on-court after his win.

Kyrgios admitted it has been ‘stressful’ for him during the lead-up to the Open, and is relieved to have advanced.

‘I was literally hanging by a thread. His (opponent Benjamin Bonzi) level today was incredible. I was not expecting an absolute war,’ Kyrgios said of his stoic opponent.

‘It could have gone either way early in the fourth but I got there. I played some really risky tennis late in that fourth set to win.

‘I’m just really happy to get through. It’s been really stressful time I have high expectations to go deep this week.

‘I felt like he was eating up my serves with his returns. To serve 30 aces helps a lot. When my serve’s going my game follows,’ said Kyrgios.

The animated Aussie has now booked his spot in the third round, where he will take on cult US star JJ Wolf.
