Nick Kyrgios’ Australian Open campaign has come to a heartbreaking end after bowing out of the fourth round against world number one Rafael Nadal.

The Australian gave it his all in a spirited performance but went down 6-3 3-6 7-6 7-6 in four sets against the Spaniard in an emotion-charged showdown.

Things began to unravel for the Australian world number three late in the third set when he lost his cool during a heated exchange with the match umpire about the linesman.

Kyrgios forced the third and fourth sets into a tie-break but lost both. 

Kyrgios lost his cool at the match umpire to complain about the linesman during an intense third set. Nadal was up 6-5.

Kyrgios then smashed his racquet during the set tie-break, promoting the the match umpire to award a violation against him.

Ash Barty is now Australia’s last remaining hope in the singles draw.
