Nicole Kidman reveals she had to explain her character’s bruises in Big Little Lies to her daughters

Nicole Kidman is opening up about some of the difficult conversations she had to have with her young daughters Faith Margaret, 10, and Sunday Rose, 13, while she was filming HBO’s Big Little Lies.

The 54-year-old actress played Celeste Wright in the critically-acclaimed series, who was in an abusive marriage with Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgard).

Kidman explained in a wide-ranging interview with Harper’s Bazaar that while sometimes filming the intense scenes with her on-screen husband, she would come home with bruises that she would have to explain to her young daughters.

‘I suppose the artist spirit, a lot of times, is saying, “I don’t care what it’s gonna cost me as a human being, because my thrust is deeply artistic,”‘ Kidman explains.

‘And that’s probably just a massive push-pull in any person who’s a painter, a writer, you know?’ she added, contemplatively.

‘If you’re really dedicated to it over a lifetime, that push-pull will collide with your existence and your connections with your family and all the people in your life. How much will that cost them? How much will it cost you personally? And how important is that artistic contribution?’ she added.
