Former world boxing champion Nigel Benn has insisted his son Conor is ‘going all the way’ and is even more dedicated than he was during his professional career ahead of his return to the ring at Fight Camp 2.

Benn Jnr is an exciting prospect in the welterweight division and arguably the most improved fighter on these shores.

The 24-year-old didn’t have much of an amateur background but has climbed up the rankings in the pro ranks over the past 12 months and can close in on a potential world title shot by beating Adrian Granados in the biggest test of his career at Matchroom’s Fight Camp 2 this weekend. 

Benn Jnr is headlining the first of three fight weekends in Eddie Hearn’s back garden on Saturday night to kick off the festival-style bonanza.

The welterweight star has big shoes to fill, with his father being one of Britain’s most loved former world champions, but Nigel believes he is destined to reach the top and revealed he doesn’t get nervous watching him anymore.

Joining his son on ITV’s Good Morning Britain from Sydney, Nigel said: ‘I know he’s (Conor) going to go all the way. 

‘When he starts meeting those superstars, the big welterweights, I believe he’s going to put in a good show against any one of them, so I don’t have nerves.

‘It’s inevitable, one day he will lose, but I know he will bounce back but he has that determination, that will to win and that’s what I love about him. Personally, I wish I was as dedicated as Conor was.’

Benn Jnr, who has won all 18 of his fights as professional, with 12 knockouts, responded: ‘It’s such a blessing for my Dad to be as proud of me as he is, that’s what every son wants.

‘I aspire to be half the man my dad was inside and outside the ring. I miss him loads.’

Benn Sr finished his career in 1996 as a two-weight world champion and is best remembered for being involved in one of boxing’s fiercest rivalries with Chris Eubank.

The former foes had two famous fights, with Eubank winning a nine-round war in 1990 before they fought to a draw three years later. Even today, there is talk of a third fight between them despite both Benn and Eubank being in their 50s.

Conor can take a step towards emulating his father’s achievements in the ring by winning on Saturday night and insisted he is ready to get the job done. 

‘I feel great. I’m in fight mode, ready to deliver another entertaining performance on Saturday night,’ he added.

 ‘All the hard work’s done now. It’s getting in there, staying composed and doing the job on Granados.’
