‘In my experience, cheaper mascaras tend to be better than expensive ones, and I have come to learn that the mascara that teenage girls use (look at them, they are serious about lashwork) is the best mascara,’ she explained.

Introducing the ‘charmingly named’ Essence mascara, she admitted it is ‘not subtle’ but gives you ‘long, long lashes and, seemingly, many more of them’.

Nigella recommends using it after having curled your lashes and avoiding using it on lower lashes.

She added: ‘It doesn’t smudge or flake, and I wouldn’t be without it.’

The Essence mascara already has somewhat of a cult following among beauty fans; shoppers have previously hailed it ‘the best budget mascara ever’ and ‘even better than high end’.

It features a conic shaped fibre brush which promises to provide lashes with length, dramatic volume and a false-lash effect.

One recently wrote: ‘After reading the reviews on this product, I had to give it a try! It’s absolutely amazing!! I’ve always used L’Oreal which is three times more expensive! My sceptical daughter tried it and loves it too!! Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed!!’

Another gushed: ‘A really good mascara, it doesn’t smudge and I like the brush. It’s a great price too and I will definitely buy again.’

And one commented: ‘As I get older my eyelashes are getting thinner and shorter. I spend a fortune on expensive thickening or lash extending mascara regularly spending £20+. That was until I discovered this! It’s truly amazing, gives me false lash look without the hassle and change from £4!’
