  • Shoppers have claimed that a new women’s Nike Air Max shoe looks like an iron
  • The shoe has a thick clear plastic sole which some say resembles the appliance
  • Nike was criticised online for ‘promoting obesity’ by using a plus-size mannequin

Shoppers have been left steaming with fury after Nike released a new women’s shoe that looks like an iron.

The new Nike Air Max FF 720 has two cut outs and a thick clear plastic sole, which some say resembles the household appliance.

While Nike claims female sponsorship from English footballer Fran Kirby and English tennis player Laura Robson, their newest sportswear seems to be sending out a very different message.

Some say the Nike Air Max FF 720 shoe, pictured above, resembles an iron. A spokesperson for feminist group ‘Not Buying It’ commented sarcastically: ‘I’m sure they’ll be doing this for men too, of course’. ‘Maybe it could be paired up with some ‘extreme ironing’ – you know, when people, mostly blokes, iron while sky diving’

Twitter user @RuvaMaps was the first to draw the connection, prompting many to reply with pictures of real irons with the caption: ‘Nike said…’ and ‘Nike Iron’.

Some Twitter users had a more light hearted response to the design, while another user @the-sheking rolled her eyes at Nike's newest invention, commenting: 'So we are wearing iron inspired sneakers now? Wow! Wow!'
