Police have not said why the fight broke out. Phillips says no weapons were involved and no major injuries were reported.
But the school was on lockdown shortly afterward and some parents arrived to take their children home for their safety.
‘I am afraid for my child’s life and that’s why I’m here to pick him up right now,’ Anita Burks, who used to teach at an elementary school, told WPMI.
She said she knows firsthand how quickly school fights can escalate.
‘I am aware of the dangerousness of fighting at school because two years ago I was injured in a classroom because of a fight and it messed my back and everything up,’ Burks said.
‘When you can’t have peace of mind of your child being safe, when you’re not there to protect them, something needs to be done,’ another parent, Lisa Brown, told News 5.

Mobile Police spokeswoman Charlette Solis says eight of the students were taken to Strickland Youth Center. But 18-year-old student Tyree Baker was taken to the Metro jail.
Two other 18-year-olds, Datarivs Nobles and Undraye Crawford, were charged with criminal trespassing for coming onto the campus afterward when they were alerted to a possible fight involving relatives or friends.
