No opponent has dribbled past Virgil van Dijk in SIXTY-FOUR appearances

No opponent has completed a dribble past Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk in any of his last SIXTY-FOUR appearances in all competitions

  • Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk has not been beaten by a player in his last 64 games
  • Van Dijk put in man-of-the-match display as Liverpool won Champions League
  • Former Reds winger John Barnes has tipped the defender to win the Ballon d’Or

It’s no secret that Virgil van Dijk has played an instrumental role in Liverpool’s success this season.

The defender was crowned PFA Player of the Year back in April for his stunning form at the back.

Van Dijk was also named in the Champions League squad of the season after putting in a man-of-the-match display as Liverpool defeated Tottenham 2-0 to get their hands on the prestigious trophy.

No player has successfully dribbled past Virgil van Dijk in his last 64 appearances

He has performed consistently at highest level and is now even being widely tipped to win the Ballon d’Or after establishing himself as one of the world’s best defenders.

But perhaps what sums up his season best is the fact that no player in his last 64 appearances has managed to dribbled past him.

Sergio Aguero, Eden Hazard, Lionel Messi and Harry Kane have all had a go and all came up short.

It is an astonishing stat that few, if any defender, would be capable of replicating and is possibly justification on its own for van Dijk to be handed the Ballon d’Or.

Former Reds winger John Barnes believes he is more than deserving of winning the highly-coveted gong.

He told talkSPORT: ‘Normally when you look at the Ballon d’Or winners, they’re either attacking midfield players or centre-forwards. They are goalscorers and eye-catching players.

‘But there haven’t been any of those types of players who have really set the world alight this season.

‘So from a point of consistency and from a point of success, for me Van Dijk would have to be the man.’
