No sign of Harry and Meghan… Are these really Tatler’s ten most ‘powerful’ Britons?

Two footballers, a pop star and a seven-year-old girl… but no sign of Harry and Meghan: Are these really Tatler’s ten most ‘powerful’ Britons?

  • Tatler magazine compiled a ‘social power index’ of the nation’s most influential
  • Was perhaps not a surprise the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were first place
  • Harper Beckham, seven, pipped the Duke and Duchess of Sussex into the top ten
  • BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg and Little Mix star Perrie Edwards and her footballer boyfriend Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also made the cut

For more than a century it has documented the lifestyles of high society.

So when Tatler magazine came to compile a ‘social power index’ of the nation’s most influential people, it was perhaps not a surprise to see the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in first place.

More unexpected, though, is that, despite their celebrity connections and charity work, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex – considered by some the epitome of a power couple – fail to make the top ten.

Not only that, they are beaten by seven-year-old Harper Beckham and two footballers. Harper, described by Tatler as ‘already a front-row fixture… jets between Los Angeles, London and the Cotswolds’, is fourth, while her parents David and Victoria are outside the top ten.

Luther star Idris Elba and his wife, the model Sabrina Dhowre, are second on the list, with financier Joseph Getty and his jewellery designer wife Sabine in third.

Tatler says part of the reason Kate and William top the index, revealed in the August issue, is that an invitation to their home is the ‘ultimate social trophy’.

Explaining its list, it said: ‘Power is the great aphrodisiac, social power the greatest of all.

Assemble the right mix of glamour, money, politics and intrigue, and you have all the elements of a night to remember.

Because it’s the guests that count. Guests who have power and influence. Guests who speak to the times that we live in.’

Others in the top ten include Sky pundit and former footballer Jamie Redknapp, BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg and Little Mix star Perrie Edwards and her boyfriend, Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who ’embody modern glamour and success’.

The Hon Will Astor, businessman and half-brother of Samantha Cameron, and his wife Lohralee are fifth, with Lord and Lady Bamford, who run JCB, in eighth.

The Marquess of Cholmondeley and his wife Rose Hanbury are tenth despite their rumoured falling out with their neighbours, the Cambridges, which they deny.

Among Tatler’s ‘most socially significant’ but outside the top ten are supermodel Kate Moss and her daughter Lila, 16, comedian Jack Whitehall, Sir Mick Jagger and Jeremy Clarkson.
