‘Nobody believed me anyway’: Tyson Fury claims that he ‘loves’ boxing too much to stay retired

Tyson Fury claims that he was ‘bored of retirement’ and has confessed nobody actually believed that he would stay out of the ring as he plots a mammoth clash with fellow Brit Anthony Joshua.

The reigning world heavyweight champion boxer announced his retirement from the sport after knocking out Dillian Whyte in April earlier this year at Wembley.

Fury maintained his retirement for a few months until Anthony Joshua’s defeat to Oleksandr Usyk, when he announced that he would come out of retirement to fight the Ukrainian.

However, his mind changed the next week – largely due to Usyk’s season-ending injury – as he gave Joshua the chance to fight him.

The Gypsy King has offered Joshua a fight in Cardiff this November with a 40 per cent split of the purse.

Joshua’s camp have accepted the offer of the fight against Fury on the condition that the fight is put back to December, one dated that has been touted is December 17. 

The willingness to take on either Joshua and Usyk came as he has now revealed that he got bored during his five months away from the sport.

He told The Ring magazine: I got bored with retirement. I had five months out the ring and changed my mind. Nobody believed me anyway, did they?

‘It was great. But nothing will ever compare with being heavyweight champion of the world. I love boxing. I absolutely adore it.’

Fury believes he would be the favourite in the fight against Joshua and that the now beltless heavyweight fighter would be in a ‘win-win situation.

He said: ‘He would be a massive underdog, so he’s in a win-win situation.

‘If everyone expects him to lose and he beats me, then he’s back on top and bigger than ever.

‘And if he’s lost three, what difference does it make if he loses four?

‘Four losses means nothing. Look at Derek Chisora, he’s had 12 losses and he’s still battling away.’

Joshua has lost his last two fights after back-to-back fights against Usyk. His other career defeat occured when he lost to Mexican Andy Ruiz Jr in 2019.
