Norrie and Konta the latest Brits through to Wimbledon second round

Brits on the march! Jo Konta leads the way and Dan Evans also sails through as four more homegrown heroes join Heather Watson and Kyle Edmund in second round of Wimbledon

  • Britain’s Harriet Dart won through to the second round at Wimbledon on Tuesday
  • The 22-year-old beat American Christina McHale 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 on Court 14
  • She was watched for a time by the Duchess of Cambridge during the first round 
  • Cameron Norrie and Jo Konta also won, but James Ward and Katie Swan are out  

Harriet Dart joined the ever-growing hoard of Brits to reach the second round of Wimbledon this year after beating Christina McHale in front of royal support.

However, the Duchess of Cambridge was only around for the first set – which Dart lost – before making her way to the Royal Box. 

In her absence, the 22-year-old was able to turn her tie around to beat the American lucky loser 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 19 minutes.

Holding serve proved tough for both women, particularly in the third set, but Dart broke a run of seven straight breaks to clinch victory and a second-round clash with either former champion Garbine Muguruza or Beatriz Haddad Maia.

Elsewhere, Dan Evans also made it through to the second round in the men’s draw. 

It was the 29-year-old’s first appearance at the All England Tennis club since 2016 as he proved far too good for Federico Delbonis.

He dispatched of the Argentine 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-3 on Court 18 and will face Nikoloz Basilashvili in the next round, who beat James Ward. 

The pair, who now join Heather Watson and Kyle Edmund in the second round, as did Cameron Norrie.

He joined the home party at Wimbledon by earning his first ever win there.

The 23-year-old beat Denis Istomin 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 to become the sixth British player into the second round.

Jo Konta, as expected, booked her place in the second round – Britain’s women’s No 1 beating Ana Bogdan 7-5, 6-2. 

But there was no such success for Katie Swan, who lost in straight sets to German Laura Siegemund.

Jay Clarke and Paul Jubb are still to come in the men’s draw.
