Northeast shivers in deadly cold

Frigid temperatures gripping parts of the northeastern United States continued to slide downward on Saturday as the region struggles to cope in the aftermath of this week’s ‘bomb cyclone.’

Meteorologists studying weather patterns in the area say that wind chills in one part of New Hampshire were forecast to hit negative 100 degrees, in what the New York Times describes as an environment so unforgiving it ‘steals your breath and freezes your eyelashes.’ 

‘You can’t blink. The cold stabs your face and numbs your earlobes to rubber,’ the Times added. Weather experts say some areas in the region are colder than the surface of Mars.

New York City is projected to experience its worst winter cold of the year on Saturday, with temperatures expected to hit 3 degrees by night fall with a windchill between -10 and -20 degrees

Meanwhile, New York City is projected to experience its worst winter cold of the year, with temperatures expected to hit 3 degrees by night fall with a windchill between -10 and -20 degrees, according to NBC News.    

Earlier Saturday, the National Weather Service issued a wind chill warning for communities in Western and Central Massachusetts, according to masslive.com, with temperatures expected to ‘feel’ as low as -25 degrees.  

Experts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania also warned that the city for what may be ‘the coldest day’ in the area in a ‘generation,’ with wind gusts making the air feel as low as minus-12 in the city of brotherly love and minus-30 in The Poconos, NBC reported.

Meteorologists studying weather patterns in the northeast past of the US say that wind chills in one part of New Hampshire were forecast to hit negative 100 degrees (Mt. Washington, New Hampshire – January 2017)

On Friday, Central Park’s green lawns were turned white, the mighty Hudson was overtaken by ice bergs and Lady Liberty stood resolute in amazing aerial photos taken a day after New York City was battered with a major snow storm. 

While the snow stopped long ago, it won’t be melting anytime soon since the city is now dealing with a deadly drop in temperature thanks to a fresh blast of Arctic air.  

Temperatures reached a high of 19 on Friday – making it even colder than when the storm hit on Thursday. 

The bitter cold temperatures have been felt across the region, while residents of states like Maryland and Virginia shiver from temps ranging from 10 degrees to 15 degrees. 

‘This is chilly, chilly stuff,’ Brian Hurley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland, said on Thursday.

The storm began two days ago in the Gulf of Mexico and first struck the Florida Panhandle. By Thursday it was wreaking havoc as blizzard warnings and states of emergency went into effect along the Eastern Seaboard. Wind gusts hit more than 70 mph in places and some areas saw as much as 18 inches of snow.

The storm caused school and business closings, airline and rail service cancellations or reductions and thousands of utilities outages, many of them restored quickly. Some ferry services even had to be shut down along the Canadian coast.

In the South, the winter weather forced portable toilets to be put in place outside Mississippi’s Capitol after pipes burst and it caused iguanas to become sluggish and topple from trees in South Florida. Residents of southeast Georgia were treated to a rare half foot of snow.

In New England, the powerful winds brought coastal flooding that reached historic levels in some communities with icy water overflowing piers, streets and restaurants and stranding some people who had to be rescued. Experts said the Wednesday supermoon was partially to blame for the flooding. 

At least seven people died in weather-related accidents.

Four people were killed in North Carolina and South Carolina after their vehicles ran off snow-covered roads, authorities said. Another fatality was reported near Philadelphia when a car could not stop at the bottom of a steep, snow-covered hill and slammed into a commuter train. A passenger in the vehicle was killed. No one on the train was hurt. 

In Virginia, a girl was struck by a pickup truck while sledding and a 75-year-old man was hit by a snow plow while clearing business parking lots, authorities said. Both died at hospitals from their injuries, police said.

The South won’t be spared, either. Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia can expect temperatures around 15 degrees to 20 degrees during the weekend, Hurley said. Northern Florida will be in the 20s to low 30s.

Sunday morning should bring the coldest temperatures from Portland, Maine, to Washington, D.C. ‘That’s when you’ll see records being challenged or broken, with temperatures at or near zero in many places,’ Hurley said.

More seasonable weather is expected to return early next week with temperatures in the high 30s and near 40s, he said. For some, it will feel downright balmy.
