Norwich couple cancel wedding to improve childbirth hopes

A couple cancelled all reservations for their £15,000 white wedding as they felt the organisational stress was hampering their chances of having a baby.

Holly and Robbie Hubbard decided to tie the knot behind closed doors – but had already booked a venue, chef, picked out a dress and put down a £1,000 deposit.

Their dream service was scrapped in favour of the secret ceremony, which left both their mothers in tears, because they were struggling to conceive and blamed the wedding planning.

Holly Hubbard and her fiance Robbie cancelled all reservations for their £15,000 white wedding as they felt the organisational stress was hampering their chances of having a baby

In August, four months after they made the decision and focussed on their IVF treatment, she became pregnant with their daughter, Alaska, who has now been born.

The couple, from near Norwich, Norfolk, retreated to a remote forest hut for their honeymoon, where they texted their nearest and dearest to inform them they had married.

Mrs Hubbard, 28, told the Mirror: ‘We’d been trying to have a baby for a couple of years with no luck, but the doctors had no idea why I couldn’t fall pregnant.

‘We can’t say for certain if the stress would have had an effect on the fertility treatment but the way we saw it, we had one shot and it wasn’t worth it and we’ve now got a lovely baby girl.’

The couple got engaged in Chicago when Mr Hubbard, 31, proposed while they visited for a friend’s wedding, and quickly started making plans.

Most of the main elements of the wedding had already been sorted – meaning friends and family were crushingly disappointed when they cancelled, but the couple are content with their decision.

Their secret wedding cost just £1,000 almost half of which was in church fees and included an £18 dress.

Mrs Hubbard added: ‘We might not have had the big day we’d initially thought but what we had was so much more special and now we’re a family.’
