Not a student? You can still bag a FREE railcard by signing up for one of these current accounts…

  • 20-25s can get a railcard if they open a Santander account and deposit £500
  • Santander says railcard users will save an average of £182 over a year

Those aged between 20 and 25 can cash in on Santander’s student benefits by nabbing themselves a free four-year railcard by opening an account with the bank before the end of April.

The offer is available to non-students who complete an application to open an Everyday, Santander Edge or Santander Edge Up current account by 30 April, deposit at least £500 in the account before 14 May and set up mobile or online banking.

Santander already offers free 16-25 Railcards to students who open accounts and have at least two years left to study and level four to seven apprentices.

Significant savings: Santander says a railcard on average saves 16-25s around £182 every year

The 16-25 Railcard gives users a third off the cost of train journeys in England, Scotland and Wales, as well as on off-peak London Underground travel if they link it with their Oyster card.

The bank said on average 16-25 Railcard users save £182 per year, meaning that they could save around £728 over four years.

Those who meet the eligibility criteria will then receive a code to redeem their railcard by 31 July. Those who sign up need to be aged between 20 and 25 as of 30 June.

However, Santander said there are a limited number of railcards available, meaning that it may withdraw the offer before 30 April if there is high demand.

Andrea Melville, of Santander, said: ‘The railcard give users a third off train travel to get where they want to go, but paired with our Edge and Edge Up current accounts, customers can also benefit from cashback on their travel, as well as on their everyday spending and household bills.’

The bank’s Everyday account offers a no-fee current account, while its Santander Edge account gives up to £20 cashback per month on essential spending and a 7 per cent AER saver for a monthly fee of £3.

The Santander Edge Up account offers up to £30 cashback and 3.5 per cent credit interest on the current account balance for £5 per month.

The Edge and Edge Up accounts also offer fee-free spending when abroad, while the Everyday account only allows free withdrawals from Santander cash machines.
