NRL star Latrell Mitchell went home to Taree to help residents fight bushfires as they ravaged New South Wales on Tuesday.

The Sydney Roosters centre, 22, was filmed in a series of videos putting out a grass fire with a hose on what appeared to be a friend’s farm.

Mitchell has been outspoken about the fires on social media, taking to Instagram earlier in the week to write: ‘Our ancestors are telling us something’.

In one video he can be heard saying: ‘It’s terrible man, fire just there eh?

‘I’m just helping the cattle out doing my part,’ he said.

In another, he could be seen running towards a car as a group of trees in the background went up in flames.

Taree was one of the worst hit areas as catastrophic conditions threatened NSW on Tuesday.

Mitchell, who was born in Taree in 1997, also shared a photo of him with his father and other men helping to fight the fires.

Mitchell’s contract with the Sydney Roosters runs out at the end of next season, sparking a scrap between other clubs to sign him.

Since the Roosters withdrew their $800,000 per season offer for the 2021 and 2022 seasons, West Tigers, Canterbury and North Queensland have all been linked to Mitchell.

It is unclear whether any club would be willing to pay more than the Roosters’ original offer but it’s understood the Roosters would be willing to let him leave immediately if they were financially compensated.

Mitchell is reportedly being advised by up to three agents, including Wayde Rushton, Matt Rose and Mario Tartak, and family friend Anthony Mundine.

In an interview with Nine Media, Mundine said Mitchell should do what’s best for his young family.

‘He has a kid and another one on the way. He has to do what’s best for them and that’s to get as much money as he can,’ he said.
