  • Nurse’s barrister said all drivers have been guilty of ‘momentary inattention’

A nurse who mowed down a pedestrian has avoided jail because the 25-year-old mother was distracted by her sick daughter.

Hannah Evans ploughed into the dog walker when she looked away from the road while driving.

The parent, from Loughor, was trying to care for her child when the accident happened.

The specialist burns nurse walked free from Swansea Crown Court, where barrister David Scutt said her ‘momentary inattention’ was something that happened to all drivers.

‘She was a mother who turned to attend to her daughter in the back seat of the car,’ he said.

Evans told police she turned to tend to her daughter moments before the accident because the child wasn’t feeling well.

When she turned around, the driver saw the pedestrian at the pavement’s edge, causing her to brake and swerve, but she still hit him. Evans admitted careless driving.
