Nutritionist shares the five-day cleanse she swears by

An Australian nutritionist has shared her favourite five-day summer cleanse – and no, it isn’t a juice fast.

Jessica Sepel is a strong advocate for healthy living and she has recently revealed that we can effectively cleanse using wholefoods and adopting a few simple lifestyle habits.

‘Many of us get tempted by the crazy liquid diets and fasts at the start of the year. Unfortunately, the results from these fads/extremes are very short lived,’ she explained.

‘I have found cleansing with food to be more effective and the results are sustainable.’

The cleanse is designed to restore your vitality and provide your body with some tender love and care.

Jessica said that she liked to do this cleanse seasonally and she believes ‘the results can be amazing’.

‘I’m talking glowing skin, a cleansed liver, restored energy, deeper sleep and weight balance – because it gets you back on track,’ she said.

‘It just really gives you time to feel good about yourself again. Many of us drink too much alcohol and caffeine which often makes us feel pretty tired and bloated.’

CUT OUT THE ‘NASTIES’

The first step when undertaking the cleanse is to remove all ‘nasties’ from your diet for the five days.

Jessica explained that foods such as caffeine, alcohol, dairy, refined sugar, wheat, gluten and red meat all fall into this category.

Other foods that should be avoided during this stage are bad fats, such as trans fats found in vegetable oils as well as processed and deep-fried foods.

She said that people should instead opt for seasonal vegetables, lots of leafy greens, fresh fruit, gluten-free grains like quinoa, brown rice buckwheat and nuts and seeds.

Jessica also recommended that people eat high quality fish, organic eggs and chicken and coconut oil or extra-virgin olive oil in your cooking.

INCORPORATE LIFESTYLE TIPS TRICKS

Jessica explained that you should try and exercise for 30 minutes each day to get your blood and lymphatic system flowing to accelerate the release of toxins.

She also said that you need to aim to drink two to three litres of filtered water a day to help your kidneys flush out toxins and explained that herbal teas are also great for increasing fluid intake and cleansing.

‘Use herbs and spices to add flavour without extra oils or fats – my detox faves are turmeric, cinnamon, nutmeg and cayenne pepper,’ she said.

Jessica recommended that people commit to eight hours sleep each night as it ‘allows our bodies to heal and regenerate new cells’ which she said is important when you’re cleansing.

During the cleanse you also need to take care of your emotional self.

She elaborated that when we cleanse, our bodies flush out toxins and sometimes this can cause certain emotions to rise.

This results us in occasionally feeling more sensitive and a little more vulnerable so she recommends you set aside time for you.

POST-CLEANSE TIPS

  • Take an Epsom salt bath three times a week
  • Jump into the ocean whenever you can
  • Get into a sauna or steam room
  • Deep belly breathe every day
  • Treat yourself to a lyphatic or Thai massage
  • Challenge yourself to avoiding alcohol for a month

DETOX YOUR ENVIRONMENT

Jessica explained that once you have started cleansing internally you need to take a look at the outside factors contributing to the toxin build-up and remove those to.

You have to be mindful of the products that you’re breathing in and one way to do this is by looking at the contents of your cleaning products and making a switch to natural detergents.

She also recommended using aluminium-free deodorant, buying organic whenever possible and wash or peeling fruit and veggies to remove pesticides.

‘Minimise exposure to plastics: use paper bags to store food, mason jars instead of plastic containers and don’t heat foods in plastic,’ she also recommended.

‘Choose cosmetics wisely – try switching to natural skin and hair products or even make your own! Don’t use fake tan and use natural sanitary products.’
