NY man dies after lying on road and getting hit by a car

A 30-year-old man died in upstate New York after lying down on a busy road and getting hit by a car, police said.

In the seconds before being hit in Syracuse, New York, on Saturday, it appeared that the man spread out on the ground to avoid being attacked by three other men, footage filmed by a bystander showed.

He was taken to Upstate University Hospital just after 1am in critical but stable condition but died of his injuries two hours later.

The man’s name is being withheld until his family is notified.

Video footage filmed from an apartment unit overlooking the street showed three men surround the 30-year-old as he got to the ground.

One man appeared to kick him before the group walked away, leaving him in the middle of the road.

Seconds later, two vehicles slowly drove by to avoid the man, but a third driver saw him so late and struck the man with his vehicle.

The 26-year-old driver, Naquan Palmer, of Syracuse, remained at the scene and told police he hadn’t seen the pedestrian in the road.

Although the man sustained several injuries, he was conscious when police arrived and they initially believed he was going to survive.

Hours later, he succumbed to his injured and died in hospital around 3am.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident and are asking anyone who has information about to crash to call (315) 442-5130.

In a statement on Facebook, the Syracuse Police Department said: ‘Syracuse Police are continuing to investigate a Pedestrian Crash which resulted in the pedestrian succumbing to those injuries several hours later.

‘Police were called to the 300 blk. of N Salina St. shortly before 1:00 am today for reports of a pedestrian struck by a car.

‘When police arrived they found a male pedestrian conscious with multiple injuries he had sustained from the crash. 

‘Emergency personnel tended to the victim and he was transported by American Medical Transport to Upstate University Hospital where he was listed in Critical but stable condition.

‘It appeared at that time that those injuries he suffered were nonlife threatening.’
