If you don’t already know Justine Marjan by name, you’re about to. She’s one of the Kardashian’s go-to hair pros, is Tresemme’s Global Stylist and is leading no fewer than five of the brand’s sponsored shows this New York Fashion Week, including Creatures of Comfort.
She’s also the woman responsible for some the biggest trending looks of the season, including the stick-straight strands seen on everyone from Kim Kardashian West to Kerry Washington and the messy high ponytails spotted on the likes of Shay Mitchell, Olivia Culpo and Khloe Kardashian.
While she’s all for a good haircut – the blunter the better for fall 2017 – and the right styling products, Justine isn’t one to buy into #wokeuplikethis looks. Her personal hair mantra? It’s better to be late than to show up with bad hair.
The LA-based stylist stopped by the Dailymail.com offices the week before NYFW to show three staffers how to re-create the not-so-effortless styles she has created recently for her celebrity clients. Watch and learn.
KHLOE KARDASHIAN’S SPACE BUNS
Welcome to the space jam: Hairstylist Justine Marjan gave Khloe Kardashian, 33, ‘space bunnies’ for an episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians
Space-age style: Justine recreated the space-bun ‘do on beauty writer Sarah Ferguson, 27. ‘I got so much attention for them, especially from men, which was surprising,’ she said
Justine created the whimsical ‘space bunny’ style on Khloe Kardashian for an episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. While the 33-year-old reality star liked the look, her older sisters were not fans.
‘We did this in in Miami, for the show, and all of her sisters hated it and made her change it ten minutes later,’ Justine said. ‘They were like, “You’re going out like that? You look like Miley Cyrus.”‘
The style isn’t for everyone. ‘I definitely think this is for the 35-and-under crowd,’ Justine admitted.
But like Khloe, beauty writer Sarah Ferguson, 27, really liked the end result.
‘I wear my hair down with waves most days and the buns are a really fun way to spice up that look,’ she said. ‘They made my hair feel like an accessory! Later that day, I got a handful of random compliments on my hair from strangers – all men, which was surprising. Even my fruit-stand guy said they were “really cool”.’
To keep the style from looking too child-ish, Justine recommends tying the pigtails into knots rather than buns.
THE HOW-TO:
Copy Khloe’s look! STEP 1 (left): Create a clean, center part with a rat-tail comb. STEP 2 (right): Prep hair with strong-hold hairspray from roots to ends to add grip
STEP 3: Section hair into one-inch horizontal sections and hold a flat-iron at angle to create S-waves by twisting the iron in an up-and-down bevel motion, leaving the ends straight. ‘Start under, so you can get more volume at the root,’ advises Justine
Not feeling the double-bun look? Stop at this step and rock the effortless waves Justine oftentimes gives her clients
STEP 4 (left): On each side of the part, pull a section of hair from the top of the ear to the crown of the head, leaving out a few face framing pieces, and secure with an elastic. STEP 5 (right): Spray with dry shampoo for more texture and gently backcomb the pigtails for volume
STEP 8 (left): To make hair appear fuller, fill in any sparse areas around the hairline with brow powder. STEP 9 (right): Set the style with strong-hold hairspray
SHAY MITCHELL’S FLIRTY, BRAIDED PONYTAIL
My not-so-little ponytail! Justine (left) called the high ponytail with hidden braid she did for Shay Mitchell (right), 30, ‘the #messypony of my dreams’ on Instagram
So versatile: Chynna Mela, 26, US social media editor, usually wears her blonde hair down but said she would definitely try this messy ponytail for both the gym and dinner with pals
High, flirty, messy ponytails are one of Justine’s signature styles. A quick look through her Instagram confirms she’s created the look on everyone from Shay Mitchell, 30, to Chrissy Teigen, 31, and Demi Lovato, 25.
Doing an inside-out French braid on either side of the ponytail also gives it a more interesting, polished feel. Applying a product like the Tresemmé Repair & Protect 7 Pre-Styling Spray on your fingers before you begin the cornrows will help keep hair from getting tangled and allow you make a tighter braid, Justine suggested.
US social media editor Chynna Mela, 26, usually lets her long blonde hair air dry and wears it down, but she was all for trying something new.
‘I’m always self-conscious when going out directly from the gym if I’m in a time crunch and can’t properly do my hair,’ she said. ‘This was a great hairstyle to learn. I’d feel comfortable rocking it for a run then meeting friends for dinner!’
THE HOW-TO:
Copy Shay’s look! STEP 1 (left): Spray with hairspray and brush through the hair so it can better hold a curl. STEP 2 (right): Create four or five sections in the hair and begin curling roots-to-ends with a one-and-a-half-inch curling iron
STEP 2 (continued): Hold the barrel horizontally and alternate the direction of the curls
STEP 6 (left): Repeat Steps 3-6 on the other side. STEP 7 (right): Gather both braids and the hair at the top of the head into a ponytail where the braids meet and secure with an elastic
STEP 8 (left): Gather the bottom section of hair and pull it up to meet the ponytail at the top, spraying with hairspray as you go to get rid of any flyways and secure with another elastic. STEP 9 (right): Undo the tails of the braids you created so there are no plaints in the ponytail
STEP 10 (left): Take a one-inch section of hair from side of the ponytail and wrap it around the elastic several times to cover it. STEP 11 (right): Pin the end in place and mist with hairspray
KIM KARDASHIAN’S LONG, SLEEK STRANDS
Straight hair, don’t care: ‘Everyone wants that sleek, healthy-looking hair,’ Justine said of the pin-straight strands she did on Kim Kardashian, 36
No more curls! Angela Frawley, 28, global events manager, said the pin-straight style will be a new go-to look for her
Shiny, healthy hair is definitely in right now,’ said Justine, who has straightened the strands of Olivia Culpo, 28, as well as Kholoe and Kim Kardashian, 36.
The look takes effort, though, to get perfectly sleek. Small sections, shine serum and patience are key, said Justine, who admitted that Kim’s hair in the photos above took more than two hours to flatten.
For 28-year-old global events manager Angela Frawley, though, the work was worth it.
‘I loved how my hair felt, so smooth and sleek like I’d just been to the salon,’ she said after Justine worked her magic. ‘I kept touching it all day and it still didn’t frizz up.
‘I never usually wear it that straight and would always pop a curling wand through it as I can never get it to stay poker straight, however this was not a problem. Now knowing I can now get it that straight and with the product to make it last, I will try it more often.
‘I wore it out to a dinner with friends that night and it was a huge hit, so it will definitely be a new look for me.’
THE HOW-TO:
Copy Kim’s look! Angela has naturally wavy/curly hair that she usually blow-dries, flat-irons and then curls before she leaves the house
STEP 3 (left): Section hair and blow-dry using a boar-bristle round brush, being sure to keep the nozzle pointed down to reduce frizz and using your thumb to hold the end of the hair against the brush (right) to create tension and make it straight
STEP 4: Cleanly section hair and flat-iron one-inch pieces at the front and sides, holding the iron on the ends for an extra few seconds
STEP 5: Use crease-less hair clips to pin the front flat-ironed pieces of hair to the face while you work on the back. This will help those pieces lay flat later
STEP 6 (not pictured): Run a shine serum through the ends. STEP 7 (left and right): Spray a brush with a smoothing hairspray and brush through the hair for shine and staying power
