NYPD cops suspended for failing to check on pregnant mom

Two NYPD officers have been suspended after it emerged they allegedly failed to even leave their patrol car when they responded to a chilling 911 call to check on a pregnant young woman was found strangled to death an hour later.

Wael Jaber and Wing Hong Lau, who have both been with the department for around 10 years, had been dispatched to Tonie Wells’ home in Brooklyn on Wednesday morning.

The officers went to the three-story home in Sterling Place in Crown Heights after the 22-year-old mother called 911 at around 9am to report she was afraid of her husband Barry Wells.

‘He’s going to kill me,’ Wells screamed, the New York Daily News reports.

Jaber and Lau responded to the house, but reportedly never even left their squad car before driving away.

‘They believed the incident occurred outside, so they didn’t go in,’ a source told the New York Post.

Later that morning, a neighbor called 911 after she heard Wells’ two-year-old daughter’s screams from inside the home.

Another resident then found the mother’s dead body at the bottom of the basement stairwell.

A different set of officers arrived at the scene and found the victim, who was around eight months pregnant with her second child, had sustained bruises to her neck.

Barry Wells, 29, her husband of almost nine months, was arrested on suspicion of murder.

Police have reportedly responded to the couple’s home for two prior domestic incidents.
