The NYPD announced on Friday that it would be giving its largest reward ever for information on the shooting death of a police officer who was gunned down during a robbery in 1971.
A video released by Crime Stoppers explains that the $111,500 reward is for any information on the killing of Robert Bolden, an officer from the 75th Precinct.

The video also include appearances from Bolden’s brother and grandson, who spoke of their loved one’s impact on his family and community.
‘I never met my grandfather but he is the reason I became a cop, said 41-year-old NYPD Detective John Bolden with the 78th Precinct.
He added: ‘Growing up my grandmother and father always told me fond stories about him, how he loved being a police officer, how he loved helping people in the community and how he was always working, even when he was off duty trying to help people.

The detective shared that he took on the role eight years ago in hopes of taking his grandfather’s case so that he could ‘be able to bring closure to the case and my family.’

‘My brother was a good policeman, the 82-year-old said. ‘He was very proud to be a police officer and the one thing he was very insistent of was having a uniform on.’

On January 22, 1971, Bolden was at the Dunne’s Bar and Grill when a group of men busted in and raided the place.
The 45-year-old routinely stopped at the bar after his shift and was informed by staff that someone was still inside the phone booth, the New York Daily News reports.
When Bolden tapped on the phone booth door and said that the establishment was closing for the night, a man busted out and starting firing a sawed off shot gun.
The officer returned fire but was shot in the chest and died at the scene. When fleeing, the gunman took Bolden’s revolver and shield. Neither have been recovered.
According to George Bolden, several people were arrested for the murder but charges never stuck for them.
