Obese cat Bazooka tips the scales at a whopping 35LBS after being over fed

Obese tabby cat Bazooka who tips the scales at a whopping 35LBS is put on a strict weight loss plan – after his owner with dementia accidentally kept feeding him when he’d already eaten

  • The five-year-old feline named Bazooka arrived at the Wake County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty in North Carolina earlier this week
  • It took two staffers to carry the portly cat into the shelter in his crate
  • SPCA spokesperson Darci Vanderslik said they are hoping they’re hoping Bazooka’s prescription diet will help him lose at least 10 to 15 pounds
  • The cat previously lived with a senior citizen who had dementia, and the SPCA believes his last owner kept feeding him, forgetting he had already eaten
  • Bazooka’s weight loss will continue to be monitored when he moves into his forever home on Monday

A 35-pound orange tabby cat is embarking on a weight loss journey after arriving at a North Carolina shelter this week.

The five-year-old feline, aptly named Bazooka, has started the next chapter of his life at the Wake County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty, where it took two people to carry him into the shelter in his crate.

‘Thirty-five pounds is a lot of weight for a cat so we’re really hoping we can get him down 20 pounds, 25 pounds, even lighter than that,’ SPCA spokesperson Darci Vanderslik told ABC News’ Raleigh station WTVD.

Bazooka came from one of the shelter’s transfer partners in Davidson County, which is about two hours away.

The portly cat previously lived with a senior citizen who had dementia, and the Wake County SPCA believes Bazooka’s last owner kept feeding him, forgetting he had already eaten.

‘They alerted us to Bazooka here and once we saw the pictures we were like, “We have to get this kitty,”‘ Vanderslik said.

WebMD’s Pet Health Center states that ‘most domestic cats should weigh about 10 pounds, though that can vary by breed and frame.’

Bazooka has been on a prescription diet and receiving medical care from a trained foster family, but he is moving into his forever home on Monday.

The cat’s new family will continue to try and get his weight down, with the goal of him shedding at least 10 to 15 pounds on his new eating plan.

A video of Bazooka being chauffeured into the shelter like a king was shared on the Wake County SPCA’s Facebook page on Tuesday.

The shelter also posted a picture of one of its staffers cuddling the pudgy feline, writing: ‘Get ready for a lotta love! This is Bazooka, he just arrived from one of SPCA Wake’s valued transfer partners. He weighs in at just over 35lbs!

‘Because of your support, we’re giving this big boy a new life. He’s heading to a trained foster family where he’ll receive medical treatment and start on his weight loss journey!’

Bazooka got plenty of love and support from commenters who couldn’t stop gushing about the orange tabby.

‘Thank you for helping him. He’s handsome,’ one person wrote, while another added: ‘I’m obsessed with this cat.’

One woman even defended his weight, saying: ‘Y’all sometimes cats are just big. My love is on a timed feeder and script food and is still 20lbs!’
