O’Connor, Perth fire: Person is killed in warehouse blaze

A person has died and two others have been injured in a fire that engulfed an industrial warehouse.

Firefighters were called to a marine engineering facility on Zeta Crescent, in O’Connor, in Perth’s south, at about 3.30pm on Saturday.

Thirteen crews worked to extinguish the blaze for an hour before it was brought under control.

WA Police have confirmed one body was found inside the warehouse.

It’s unclear if anyone else was inside the building at the time it caught alight.

Arson squad detectives have been called in to investigate the cause of the fire.

Thick black smoke was seen billowing into the sky with nearby residents told to stay inside with all windows and doors closed.

Witness Candice Waugh told reporters she heard a loud bang before she saw smoke fly into the sky.

‘We heard a big, big boom and felt a shockwave, a little bit of a tremor, through the ground,’ she said.

‘It sounded like a gas explosion, we could see black smoke coming out of the door.’
