Ohio team booted from youth league over ‘racist’ jerseys

An Ohio youth basketball team with a sexually suggestive team name and uniforms deemed racist and offensive has been kicked out of their league.

A team for Kings Mills called the ‘Wet Dream Team’ – which is made up predominantly of white players – was booted from the Cincinnati Recreational League, three weeks into the Kings Rec Basketball season.

The drama unfolded on Sunday during a game at West Clermont Middle School when parents on the opposing team noticed that players on the team were wearing jerseys that contained racist and offensive words in place of their last names.

According to parent Tony Rue, whose son plays on West Clermont’s team, one player had a uniform with the word ‘Coon’ on the back.

The ‘Wet Dream Team’, a youth basketball team in Cincinnati, was kicked out of their league after parents made an uproar over the team’s sexually suggestive name and offensive jerseys

Another teen had ‘Knee Grow’ printed on the back, and a third member had ‘Dirp Dirp’ on his jersey.

‘A Rec league or not, please explain how this is even remotely considered appropriate for a high school basketball game,’ Rue wrote on Facebook, sharing pictures of Wet Dream’s uniforms.

‘From a team name referencing sexual conduct to offensive and racist nicknames. By no means are we perfect parents or assume our teenage boys are innocent and don’t speak of things like this, but I could never imagine allowing my teenage son to represent his school and league in this manner, let alone representing our family with such filth.

On Monday, one day after the uproar, Cincinnati Recreational League announced that the team had been kicked out.

‘Based on the information that we received, the actions and conduct of the team in question did not comply with our stated mission and expected standards and that team has, therefore, been dismissed from our league,’ spokesman Ben Goodyear told the Cincinnati Enquirer.

The team, for seventh to 12th graders, was made up of students from Kings Mills district.

A spokeswoman for the district told the Enquirer that the team was not affiliated with the schools and would no longer be allowed to use their facilities.

‘Kings Local Schools strongly condemns any type of hateful and racist commentary. This behavior is in no way welcome or tolerated in our schools and community,’ Dawn Gould said.

The coach for the team issued an apology saying the team offered to cover up or change the jerseys.

‘We sincerely apologize to anyone that was offended by the jerseys,’ the coach said in a statement via Kings Rec. ‘We offered to cover them up or change, however the league saw fit to remove us and we have accepted that decision.’

Rue, and other parents, are still wondering why the team was allowed to make it so far in the league with its offensive name and jerseys.

‘No one thought this was a bad idea or inappropriate,’ he wrote on Facebook. ‘There must be accountability.’
