After the win, Mayfield agreed with Riley’s assessment.
‘I got caught up in a competitive game, a chippy game, but what I did today, tonight, was unacceptable,’ Mayfield told reporters. ‘I am a competitive player but what I did was unacceptable so I apologize. It’s disrespectful. It’s not the example I want to set. It’s not the legacy I want to leave at OU. I truly do apologize.’
Prior to the game, Kansas players refused to shake Mayfield’s hand during the opening coin toss. Later the Jayhawks were flagged for a late hit on Mayfield in the second quarter.
Mayfield has been in trouble before.
Over the off-season, Mayfield was arrested in Arkansas and charged with public intoxication, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and fleeing the scene of a crime.
In September he planted a flag at midfield after the Sooners’ upset of the Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus. He later apologized.
