Fears for Australia’s historic Old Parliament House as fire rips through the building sending plumes of black smoke into the air – as protesters carrying Aboriginal flags shout ‘let it burn’

Old Parliament House in Canberra has been evacuated after a fire broke out on Thursday morning. 

Protesters at the site are reportedly chanting ‘let it burn’. 

Melbourne chef Adrian Richardson witnessed the blaze.

‘There’s a lot of police, there’s a lot of police with flags all waving and screaming, a lot of fire trucks,’ he told Shane McInnes on Melbourne radio station 3AW.

‘I saw the balcony above the front steps bursting into flames.

Video on social media showed fire and plumes of smoke billowing out of the building.

A line of police is keeping people away from the building and alarm bells can be heard ringing.

Mr Richardson says it looks like the blaze has now been extinguished. 

The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
