Olivier Giroud completes £1m move to AC Milan from Chelsea with veteran striker handed the No 9 jersey after becoming surplus to requirements at the Blues

AC Milan have confirmed the signing of Olivier Giroud on permanent basis from Chelsea. 

The French striker – who scored 39 goals in 119 appearances for the Blues, winning the Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup – has signed a two year deal with the Italian giants worth £1million.

Giroud – who will be handed the No 9 jersey in Italy – will also receive an extra £1m in bonuses subject to a number of appearances and the club’s qualification for the Champions League.

The announcement came after Giroud completed his medical at Milan’s La Madonnina clinic on Friday morning. 

Following his medical at approximately 7am, the striker took to Twitter to thank Chelsea for the ‘special moments’ he experienced at the club and express his excitement over his ‘new journey’.

‘To all the Blues, to my teammates, to all my coaches, to the whole club, a huge thank you for these special moments,’ he wrote.

‘I’m starting a new journey with a light and happy heart. Our victories in FA Cup, Europa League and Champions League have been magnificent.’ 

Giroud joined Chelsea in January 2018 from Arsenal for £18m. The move came six years after he joined the Premier League from Montpellier for £10.8m.

However, the striker did win the 2018 World Cup with the French national side in Russia. 

Now Giroud will look to excel in the Italian top-flight and help AC Milan secure a place in the Champions League following a seven-year absence.
