Ollie Wines is taken out of Port Adelaide game after suffering heart scare during Power’s clash with Hawthorn

Brownlow medalist Ollie Wines made an early exit from Port Adelaide’s game against Hawthorn after experiencing heart issues.

The 29-year-old went on his haunches while a passage of play unfolded nearby towards the end of the first quarter, before slowly making his way to the interchange bench at Adelaide Oval.

It was unclear what was the matter with the midfielder, with pundits left mystified.

‘We certainly didn’t see any injury, so when we saw that he’d been immediately subbed out, we were thinking, ‘What has happened?’ Campbell Brown said at the half time break.

‘Fingers crossed that he’s OK and he’s not going to miss an extended period of football with this.’

However, Mark Soderstrom later confirmed that Wines was suffering heart problems, with the midfielder having experienced similar issues in the past.

‘If you remember back a couple of years ago, I think it was about April 2022, it was a Thursday night game, and Ollie Wines came off with heart palpitations,’ he said.

‘He had it checked and then the following week or so afterwards, they talked about it being an issue that was quite common, particularly amongst older people and elite athletes, where essentially it’s an arrhythmia where his heart goes out of whack.

‘A lot of dizziness and a lot of nausea associated with it — it can come in different forms.’
