Online sales accounted for a fifth of global retail revenue last year as lockdowns fuelled a boom in internet shopping.

They accounted for 19 per cent of sales in 2020, according to a United Nations survey, up from 16 per cent a year earlier.

The UK was above average with 23 per cent, while China had 25 per cent and the US 14 per cent.  South Korea reported the highest share at 25.9 per cent, up from 20.8 per cent the year before. Singapore had 12 per cent, Australia 9 per cent and Canada just 6 per cent.

China’s Alibaba was top of the rankings, then Amazon. But online travel and holiday groups were hit with Expedia and Airbnb falling down the rankings.
