Oscar producers promise host Jimmy Kimmel won’t be ‘issue-oriented’

He’s no stranger to controversy on his talk show, passionately taking on issues like health care and gun control.

But returning Oscars’ host Jimmy Kimmel, 50, won’t be bringing his usual skewering take on politics to Sunday night’s ceremony, according to the show’s producers Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd.

‘His monologue, his humor is less issue-oriented for our purposes,’ De Luca told USA Today.

The veteran producers, who also produced last year’s show, say that the comedian will address the Time’s Up movement on the night – but won’t dwell on it.

‘We will find a moment or two where we find we can address it appropriately,’ Michael said.

But one laughing matter that will definitely still be on the table is last year’s ‘Envelopegate’ scandal, in which Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway accidentally announced the Best Picture winner as La La Land instead of rightful winner Moonlight.

‘You have to have a sense of humor about life generally and this in particular,’ the producer of such box office hits as Se7en and The Social Network said.

One hot button topic Kimmel has returned to again and again on his talk show is health care for children – a personal crusade for the funny man given that his son Billy was born with a heart defect.

In December, the little fighter underwent a second successful surgery for his condition known as tetralogy of Fallot with pulmonary atresia. A third, ‘hopefully non-invasive surgery’ will be needed by his early teens.

The comedian announced the doctor’s findings during a monologue on Jimmy Kimmel Live in May: ‘Basically, the pulmonary valve was completely blocked and he has a hole in the wall between the left and right sides of his heart.’

He added, ‘[Nurses] determined he wasn’t getting enough oxygen in his blood, either in his heart or lungs … It’s a terrifying thing, you know, my wife is back in the recovery room, she has no idea what’s going on.’
