Oscars fans are rejoicing after it was officially announced that comedian Conan O’Brien will host the 97th Academy Awards in 2025, with many declaring they are ‘finally free’ of Jimmy Kimmel.
Funnyman O’Brien, 61, excitedly confirmed on Friday that he has been appointed to front the ceremony, which is set to air live on ABC on March 2.
It comes after Kimmel, 57, revealed in August that he was turning down the opportunity to return for a fifth innings.
Oscars fans heaped thanks on the Academy for swapping out Kimmel and called O’Brien’s appointment ‘one of the biggest upgrades ever’ as they voiced their delight online.
Taking to X, one said: ‘YES!! someone funny is hosting the Oscars. I’m so sick and tired of hearing Kimmel’s jokes eugh.’
Another wrote: ‘Thank God Kimmel is not hosting the Oscars again. I may enjoy it this time.’

Echoing a similar sentiment, a fourth continued: ‘Thank God for Conan O’Brien. I don’t think I could sit through another Jimmy Kimmel Oscars.’
‘Oscars host going from Jimmy Kimmel to Conan is seriously one of the biggest upgrades ever like omg,’ exclaimed a fifth.
Another said: ‘CONAN IS HOSTING THE OSCARS I REPEAT CONAN IS HOSTING THE OSCARS we’re finally free of that bland ass Jimmy Kimmel. A real funny guy is here.’
‘Very surreal whenever the Oscars get it right, especially after years of forcing viewers to look at Jimmy Kimmel,’ added a seventh.
O’Brien confirmed his Oscars job in a video shared on the Academy’s official social channels.
‘America demanded it and now it’s happening: Taco Bell’s new Cheesy Chalupa Supreme. In other news, I’m hosting the Oscars,’ he said in a tongue and cheek statement.
Next year’s ceremony will mark O’Brien’s Oscar hosting debut.

He has emceed other high-profile awards shows, like the Emmy Awards in 2002 and 2006 and the White House Correspondents’ dinner in 1995 and 2013.
Kimmel hosted the Oscars in 2017, 2018, 2023, and 2024, but earlier this year said he wouldn’t be doing it in 2025.
‘I just decided I didn’t want to deal with that this year,’ he said.
‘It was just too much last year. You wind up pushing everything off till after the Oscars, and then you have to do everything you promised to do after the Oscars, after the Oscars. I did two years [2017 and 2018], it went well.
‘I did another two years [2023 and 2024], it went well. I figured I’d take a little break.’
