Outrage after Christmas Day revellers trash Bronte Beach during wild celebrations in Sydney

  • Christmas revellers packed Bronte Beach
  • Locals complained about the rubbish

Television personality Osher Gunsberg has slammed participants of a wild beach party that took over one of Sydney’s most sought-after seaside spots on Christmas Day.

Thousands of revellers were seen flocking to Bronte Beach in the city’s eastern suburbs on Monday morning, donning red bathers for the festivities.

Video of the packed out beach quickly went viral online with many slamming attendees for the ‘disgusting’ rubbish left behind, including Gunsberg, who lives in Bronte.

‘Ah man, bit of a bloody mess that crew left behind too,’ the Bachelor host said on Monday.

As soon as the sun came out, many people packed the beaches

The event is a mecca for thousands of tourists and backpackers travelling to Australia for the summer.

Despite its attraction to foreigners, the event has in recent years drawn the ire of locals, largely due to the rubbish left behind.

‘Should have seen the rubbish left behind. Disgusting,’ one person said.

‘Worst part is they left the place an absolute mess too,’ another added.

‘(They) treat out beaches like they mean nothing.’

Others called for action to be taken before the 2024 event, with one writing: ‘They should close the beach nest year.

‘This actually looks like a nightmare and the mess you all left is disgraceful … disgusting behaviour.’

The Bronte Surf Life Saving Club, who helped patrol the beach, said it was a ‘challenging’ day for volunteers.

‘An amazing number of volunteers gave up a chunk of their Christmas Day to keep the thousands safe,’ they said.

‘Let’s hope that everyone takes their rubbish with them if the bins are all full.’

The event wasn’t without its proponents, though.

Video of the thousands-strong crowd was quickly uploaded to Tik Tok, from local and international accounts.

‘I want to know who co-ordinated this, because the memo came through,’ user Fifihay said.

Another video of the event by Canadian content creator Rory Court was viewed more than 11,000 times.
