Owen Farrell will arrive in Paris in the next 48 hours to undertake medical at Racing 92

  • The fly-half will join winger Christian Wade, Siya Kolisi and Henry Arundell
  • Farrell will also follow the likes of Jack Willis and Jack Nowell who play in France
  • Once Farrell passes his medical Saracens will receive the funds from Racing

Owen Farrell will arrive in Paris in the next 48 hours to undertake a medical with Racing 92 after officially signing for the French giants late on Monday night.

Farrell’s stunning move was confirmed by the Top14 leaders at the start of the week and he has inked a two-year deal. He will join Racing from Saracens in July.

Saracens, the club for whom the 32-year-old has played his entire domestic career, have yet to officially announce their star player and captain’s departure.

MailSport understands that’s because Mark McCall’s men are yet to receive a fee of circa £500,000 from Racing to buy Farrell out of the final year of his contract in north London.

Once Farrell passes his medical – and there is no suggestion he won’t – Saracens will receive the funds from Racing.

Saracens director of rugby McCall is due to speak to the media on Thursday by which time it is expected the deal will be recognised as complete by all parties.

Farrell will be ineligible for England while in France due to the RFU’s rules which state only players employed by Gallagher Premiership clubs can play for Steve Borthwick’s national side.

He had already stepped away from international rugby following last year’s World Cup to prioritise his and his family’s mental wellbeing after being the target of abuse.

Farrell has been told he is ‘in for a treat’ and can take his game to another level thanks to ‘incredible’ coaching when he joins Racing.

Former Wasps wing Christian Wade is already a part of a star-studded Racing squad which includes South Africa’s World Cup-winning captain Siya Kolisi and England international Henry Arundell.

Both Farrell and Wade were part of England set-ups under former national head coach Stuart Lancaster who is now the man in charge of Racing.

‘The place is buzzing. Owen is one of the best. It’s great news,’ said Wade.

‘It will be brilliant to have him in the building. Owen will really enjoy it here. We’re playing a different style of rugby. We are going pretty well as a team. We are top of the Top14 table.

‘We are playing a different style of rugby. I am really enjoying it. Owen will too.‘Our whole mindset is on starting to win championships. Stuart is on a different level. The coaching is incredible and Owen is in for a treat.’

While Farrell will soon follow the likes of Arundell, Jack Willis, Jack Nowell and other England internationals to have moved to France, one man who is staying on these shores is Will Stuart.

Prop Stuart, who has 33 Test caps, is part of a Bath side flying high in the Premiership and Champions Cup this season and has signed a new two-year deal at The Rec.
