Paralysed horse trainer, 74, is visited in hospital by dog

A 74-year-old horse trainer with no wife or children is visited by his beloved dog in hospital after a horror car crash left him paralysed.

Ian Weis, from Maryborough, Queensland, was hit by a sedan while riding his scooter in March last year.

Two nurses in the sedan saved his life by reviving him twice with CPR at the scene – but he sustained spinal injuries so horrific that he is unable to move any of his limbs.

Mr Weis is now recovering in Brisbane’s Princess Alexander Hospital after surviving four weeks in intensive care on ventilation.

He has been visited several times by his best friend, a nine-year-old Blue Heeler named Bitz, as moving pictures show the dog trying to lick her owner’s face and leaning carefully over his bedside.

Mr Weis, who managed his own horse breeding business, can move using a Special Mobility Chair that is controlled by his chin and a device called a sipper puffer which responds to him sucking or blowing air.

His niece Lesley described the moment she and her husband were told her uncle’s life would never be the same again.

She said: ‘On the 19 March at 11.10am, we received the devastating phone call and news that Uncle Ian was in hospital having sustained numerous breaks, fractures and dislocations.

‘He fractured his back, ribs and suffered numerous other internal injuries. We learnt that this would change his life and our families forever.’

She said that her uncle, who loves fishing camping, travelling, and spending time with friends from his Older Men Unlimited club, pulled through with great strength.

‘Uncle Ian’s determination, strength and courage, has continued throughout, and even after just a short few weeks, a flicker of movement was visible in Uncle Ian’s fingers,’ she said.

Now Lesley has started a Go Fund Me page to raise money to buy a suitable car for Mr Weis and modify his house for his needs. You can donate here.
