A mum has sparked debate after her child’s school teacher suggested she prepare pre-packaged meals for the entire class to celebrate her daughter’s birthday.
Natali, from the US, said the school ‘doesn’t allow traditional classroom birthday parties’.
As an alternative a teacher shared a photo of a box she could make for the whole class that contained a pizza slice, a juice pack and a cupcake.
She shared the photo on Facebook and said the school allows ‘prepackaged meals for easy distribution’ during snack time.
‘I’m trying to think of something to put together that’s a little more fun for the kiddos. Recommendations would be greatly appreciated,’ she added.
However, fellow parents were appalled by the school’s idea and how unhealthy it looked.

‘Ummm sorry. WHAT?! They want you to send a meal for every kid instead of just a treat?’ one mum asked, adding: ‘And also you’re allowed to bring in items that are open or have been made at home?’
Another wrote: ‘I would be super annoyed if another parent fed my child sugar and junk food at school. Especially when I go to so much effort preparing a healthy snack and lunch. This kind of birthday treat idea would not be permitted in Australia.’
A third said: ‘I would rather order pizza and go to the class to help the teacher hand out plates. This seems very extra for pizza, Capri Sun [juice] and cup cakes.’
‘Wow that’s so much work. I would never do all that. I’d send in cupcakes and that’s it,’ someone else added.
Despite the concern, other mums offered helpful suggestions as to what Natali can prepare for her daughter.
Popular options were cupcake boxes or party bag, while others suggested something more savoury like mini sandwiches.
One mum said: ‘I’d bring a goodie bag for the kids to take home. Personally, this looks like a meal not a snack.’
Another mum warned: ‘Just make sure there’s no allergies or diabetics.’
‘Wow, I’m so glad my son’s birthday is in the summer. I would never send something like this for all the kids,’ a third said.
