Paris Olympics: Aussie sprinter Ebony Lane hits back after controversial snub from 4x100m relay

Shattered Australian sprinter Ebony Lane has issued a snarky statement after she missed out on a spot on the relay team at the Olympics in Paris.

The ‘heartbroken’ athlete, from Echuca in Victoria, took to social media to express her shock over her exclusion from the 4x100m women’s relay ahead of the heats on Thursday.

Lane, 25, claims that she wasn’t given a reason as to why she was the unlucky one left out – ending her Olympic campaign before it had even started.

National selectors picked five sprinters to represent Australia in Paris but with only four relay spots up for grabs, one runner was always destined to be dropped.

‘I feel I had done enough to be in that team with the season I had,’ a disappointed Lane wrote.

‘Just missing a qualifying spot in the 100m at Olympics, 3rd at nationals, 2nd at Oceania champs, apart of the team that qualified the team for Olympics, and winning multiple races this year and then dropped from the relay with not many answers to why.

‘I am fit, healthy and ready to go and I have worked extremely hard all year for this moment.

‘I will continue to love and support the girls in the team through this experience.

‘I have great people around me and thank you to everyone who has supported me in this journey so far. Bring on next year.’

Lane’s omission meant that Australia’s team consisted of Ella Connolly, Kristie Edwards, Bree Masters and Torrie Lewis on the anchor leg.

The decision surprise fans as Lane was part of the relay team that broke the Australian record at the Sydney Track Classic in March with a time of 42.95.

That team also included Australia’s fastest woman, Lewis, as well as Masters and Connolly.

Lane’s teammates finished fourth in their heat on Thursday behind the USA, Germany and Switzerland.

They missed out on the final by 0.11 seconds.

The Australian men also failed to progress in the 4x100m heats shortly afterwards but posted a new national record.
