Paris Saint-Germain ‘remain extremely confident Mauricio Pochettino will stay at the club’

Paris Saint-Germain ‘remain extremely confident Mauricio Pochettino will stay at the club’ after triggering 12-month extension in his deal… in a blow to Tottenham’s hopes of securing sensational return for Argentine

  • Talks have taken place between Mauricio Pochettino and Spurs about a return
  • Reports in France on Tuesday suggested he had told PSG he wanted to leave
  • The Telegraph report he did not say this to Nasser Al-Khelaifi in their meeting
  • The club recently triggered a 12-month contract extension on his current deal

Paris Saint-Germain are still adamant boss Mauricio Pochettino will remain at the club despite growing speculation about a return to Tottenham, according to reports.

Talks have been held between the Argentine and Spurs over a return to the Premier League side after the sacking of his successor, Jose Mourinho, in April.

Reports in France however went one step further on Tuesday and claimed the 49-year-old had told PSG chiefs he wanted to leave just six months after replacing Thomas Tuchel.

However, The Telegraph claim club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi spoke to Pochettino and at no point did he indicate that he wanted to leave, while other senior figures at the Ligue 1 side also insist he will continue in his current post.

The club recently triggered a 12-month contract extension on his initial 18-month contract, resulting in Pochettino being tied to the club until 2023.

Sporting director Leonardo said: ‘Mauricio Pochettino has two years left on his contract here at PSG and we are very happy with him.’

The extension comes despite PSG surrendering their Ligue 1 crown to Lille in the 2020-21 season, while they were knocked out by Manchester City in the Champions League semi-finals having beaten Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

However, he still managed some success with winning the French Super Cup and French Cup and has already discussed summer transfer window plans with the club to help reclaim their domestic crown.

Pochettino – who was sacked by Spurs in November 2019 after five years in charge – was also linked with the Real Madrid post prior to their appointment of Carlo Ancelotti.

Spurs have seen a number of potential candidates fall by the wayside in their search for a permanent manager since Jose Mourinho was sacked in April.

Julian Nagelsmann agreed to join Bayern Munich from RB Leipzig and Brendan Rodgers has reiterated his commitment to FA Cup winners Leicester, even after they missed out on the top four on the final day of the season.

Ajax have extended the contract of manager Erik Ten Hag for another year until 2023.

Like Pochettino, that has seemingly not put Ten Hag totally out of reach, though Dutch sources believe a move to Spurs after adding 12 months to his contract is unlikely.
