Parking fines are SCRAPPED leaving drivers free to leave their car in most areas – but motorists are warned not to ignore certain zones

Parking fines will be scrapped in Melbourne and Sydney as local governments adjust to the coronavirus quarantine lockdown. 

Melbourne’s lord mayor Sally Capp has said parking fines would not be issued in the city for anyone parked in a zone with a green sign. 

Zones with red signs – such as disability parking, emergency services, and loading areas – will continue to have fines be applied. 

Sydney lord mayor Clover Moore issued similar advice saying that parking rangers would use their discretion.

The rangers and have been told to only issued penalties where there is an imminent public or environmental health and safety risk. 

‘Over the past two months, the City has been working with NSW Health to ensure we respond urgently and effectively to the spread of COVID-19,’ Ms Moore told the SMH.

‘The health and wellbeing of our communities is paramount, but we are also very concerned about businesses experiencing a significant downturn in patrons, and people left without work.’ 

The City of Sydney has also said it would work with its business partners and contractors to support them so they can ‘continue to pay their staff.’ 

State governments with the backing of Canberra issued shutdown orders for a wide array of businesses from midday Monday. 

Pubs, clubs, cinemas, and gyms were among those ordered to shut their doors while restaurants and cafes are allowed to cater for takeaway and delivery orders only. 

Thousands of Australians were lining up at Centrelink offices and logging into the MyGov app on Monday and Tuesday after finding themselves unemployed. 

State and federal government have unveiled multiple stimulus packages worth billions to try and prop up the economy during the next few months.
