A passenger on an Australian cruise ship has died while onshore in the island nation of Vanuatu.

P&O Cruises confirmed that the person was travelling on the Pacific Adventure cruise liner and died at Mystery Island.

‘We extend our deepest condolences to their loved ones and are doing everything we can to support them during this difficult time,’ the spokesperson said.

‘As we are working with the relevant authorities and to protect the privacy of the family, it would be inappropriate to comment further.’

The death follows another tragedy earlier this year that also happened at Mystery Island.

In May, a passenger from the Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Splendor ship died while swimming.

At the time, the company said in a statement that ‘Carnival Cruise Line is deeply saddened by the death of a guest on Mystery Island, following what appears to be a medical situation whilst swimming.’

A passenger on the ship told 7NEWS the passenger died while snorkelling.

Mystery Island is a popular stop for tourists visiting Vanuatu and is famed for its beaches, clear water and coral.
