Pat Cummins breaks IPL record as Sunrisers Hyderabad pay $3.66MILLION for Australia captain while India’s World Cup final tormentor Travis Head is snapped up

  • His World Cup winning teammate Travis Head has been snapped up

Australia captain Pat Cummins became the most expensive player in IPL history after being signed by Sunrisers for 20.5 crore Indian rupees (around AU$3.66million or £1.945m).

That eclipsed the record of 18.5 crore Indian rupees that Punjab Kings paid for England all-rounder Sam Curran in last year’s auction.

Cummins joins international team-mate Travis Head at Hyderabad, the 30-year-old fast bowler having played 42 matches in the IPL for Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals.

Head broke India’s hearts in the World Cup final where his stunning knock took the match away from the hosts and ensured Australia went home with the trophy in Ahmedabad.

Cummins was in contention for an awkward reunion with former Australia coach Justin Langer, who left his post almost two years ago in acrimonious circumstances.

Langer will coach Lucknow in 2024, but his franchise did not engage in a bidding war for Cummins.

Meanwhile, Australia superstar Steve Smith went unsold in the auction.
