Pat McAfee accuses Dallas Cowboys of ‘robbing’ their own kicker after basic error

If Brandon Aubrey retires without any NFL records, ESPN’s Pat McAfee thinks Dallas’ kicker can safely blame his Cowboys teammates.

‘Brandon Aubrey robbed of that 66 yarder is a real travesty,’ McAfee wrote on X after what would have been the longest field goal in NFL history was negated by a penalty. ‘I’m so bummed [out] for him. This dude is phenomenal.’

The moment occurred at the end of the first half in Cleveland on Monday, where the visiting Cowboys would go on to beat the Browns, 33-17.

Aubrey was attempting a 66-yard field goal on the final play of the second quarter, and although he managed to split the upright, Dallas was flagged for delay of game.

‘Aubrey, gets into it,’ Fox Sports’ Kevin Burkhardt said alongside his co-anchor, Tom Brady. ‘Whistles on this one. Look at this thing, though. It would have been good!’

The penalty pushed Dallas out of field-goal range, although fans online wanted to see Aubrey attempt a 71-yard field goal.

‘They should’ve let Aubrey try the 71 yarder!’ one fan wrote on X. ‘I’m upset.’

Another added: ‘No clue why they didn’t attempt the 71 yarder.’

Instead of a field goal, the Cowboys tried one more offensive play, only to see quarterback Dak Prescott’s deep throw down the middle of the field fall incomplete. The two teams went into the half with Dallas leading 20-3.

Aubrey did connect on all four of his official attempts on Sunday in Cleveland, including a 57-yard bomb.

Had his 66-yard attempt counted, he would have tied Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker’s NFL record, which he set on September 26, 2021 against the Detroit Lions.

A former soccer player who was drafted by Toronto FC of the MLS, Aubrey decided to focus on football in the 2020s, and has since signed in the USFL before joining the Cowboys in 2023.

His career-long field goal is a 60-yarder he got with Dallas last season.
