‘Obviously they didn’t want me in an ongoing role’: Patti Newton, 73, will make her debut on Neighbours and get killed off in the same episode

Patti Newton is the latest celebrity set to make a cameo in Neighbours.

However, the Australian icon’s role isn’t set to be a long one, with her character getting killed off in the very same episode she makes her debut in.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph on Wednesday, the 73-year-old joked: ‘Obviously, they didn’t want me in an on-going role.’

Patti will be playing Valerie Grundy in the show’s milestone 8,000th episode.

Her character is described as an ‘eccentric woman who lives a sad and lonely life’, before she meets her sudden end.

‘For an old dear like me, it’s nice to have a challenge and get out of your comfort zone,’ Patti, who is the wife of entertainment icon Bert Newton, added.

Although her part will be short-lived, there is hope for an on-screen return.

Patti joked that a producer had told her she could one day make a triumphant move back onto Ramsay Street as a ghost or Valerie’s secret twin sister.

Despite a showbiz career spanning over five decades, Australians best know Patti for her stage shows, music offerings and famous family, rather than acting.

In recent years the star has also dabbled with reality television.

Back in 2007, Patti appeared on both Dancing With The Stars, where she was eliminated seventh after a successful stint, and also on Deal or No Deal.

She later appeared on season two of The Celebrity Apprentice Australia alongside David Hasselhoff, and was ‘fired’ after the fifth challenge.
