Patti Newton’s desperate plea to her troubled son Matthew after years out of the spotlight following two arrests

Patti Newton has issued a desperate plea for her troubled son Matthew as he focuses on his new life with wife Catherine Schneiderman in Texas.

According to Woman’s Day, the 78-year-old is committed to having her son return to Melbourne for a reunion after years away from home and a series of scandals.

Matthew, 46, who has stayed out of the public spotlight after two arrests in Miami in 2012, and his wife Catherine, 30, are living in a mansion on the outskirts of Texas.

‘Moving to Texas is the best thing either of them could have done. They’re loving a new outdoorsy life and they’re both looking and feeling great,’ a source said.

‘[But] Patti desperately wants them to come home to Australia.’

Matthew hasn’t been home to Australia in years and didn’t return for his father Bert’s funeral in 2021.

He has been enjoying a quiet and anonymous life in America since getting married six years ago following a series of scandals.

This includes domestic violence allegations from two former girlfriends: Australian actresses Brooke Satchwell, 40, and Rachael Taylor, 37.

Matthew was also charged in 2011 for assaulting a cab driver on the way to a children’s party.

He was also arrested twice in Miami, Florida, in 2012 – the first for trespassing and resisting officers, while a second incident saw him charged with battery and resisting arrest after he attacked a hotel receptionist.

Following the charges, Matthew checked into the Betty Ford Center in California for 90 days of alcohol and drug treatment.

Matthew, who suffers from bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and has a history of addiction, refrains from the spotlight.

He had starred in a range of successful Australian television shows before moving overseas.

Matthew now spends his days swimming and hiking with Catherine and their two dogs.

Matthew and Catherine, who is the daughter of former New York attorney-general Eric Schneiderman, began dating in 2012 and got engaged in October 2016.

A family friend told New Idea in 2017 the couple had secretly married at the home of Catherine’s mother in New York.
