One Nation founder Pauline Hanson’s daughter has announced she is making a run for the Senate as the party’s lead candidate for Tasmania.

Lee Hanson, who announced her campaign with her mother on Thursday, said she would focus on education, housing, health and the cost of living.

She said far from being a ‘polarising’ figure like Hanson senior, she stood for fixing everyday issues, telling Aussies: ‘I’m not my mother’.

Lee, who was born in 1984, said she had never envisioned a career in politics but after becoming a mother herself she felt like she needed to contribute to the nation’s future.

‘If you had asked me 10 years ago if I would be standing here right now, I would have said absolutely not, no way,’ she told Seven’s Sunrise program on Thursday.

‘Seeing what she’s been through, as a child witnessing your parent… the turmoils, ups and downs – why would you want to put yourself through that?

‘However, I’m a mum myself now, so I’m at a point where I feel I need to stand up. I care too much about my children’s future, so it’s time to make a change. I have the experience and here I am, I’ll give it a go.’

Lee has previously worked in HR for TasWater, as a director for the University of Tasmania and most recently in a senior position for Hydro Tasmania.

The specifics of her campaign platform include allowing couples with children to file joint tax returns and supporting the Coalition’s halving of the fuel excise, which would drop petrol prices.

She will also focus on bringing back bulk billing and overhauling Tasmania’s healthcare system, which she said had been neglected.

Lee said she was grateful for the values her mother had taught her but said they didn’t always see eye-to-eye on every issue.

According to One Nation, Lee represents a ‘generational shift’ for the party often considered to represent the views of older Australians.

‘She doesn’t go along with everything that I say, she’s telling me (views) from a younger perspective,’ Pauline said.

One Nation currently has two seats in federal parliament held by Pauline and Malcolm Roberts, which are both in the Senate representing Queensland.

The party also has a member in state parliaments in NSW, SA, Victoria and WA.
